HGV Insurance – Driver Advice

One of the best ways of keeping your HGV insurance premium down to a minimum is by employing the very best HGV drivers with impeccable records and lots of driving experience.

As the recession puts more and more pressure on HGV firms to save money and reduce costs they are turning more and more to these drivers, leaving newly qualified HGV drivers out in the cold.

So what do you do if you want to become one of those chosen few? Below we explain the best way of becoming a HGV Driver and proving to companies that you have what it takes to keep their HGV Insurance to a minimum.

The job itself has changed quite considerably from the days of old and you now need lots of patience, a lot of energy and be very happy with your own company. Together, these traits are hard to come by so think carefully before committing yourself to such a course.

To drive a HGV and qualifiy to go on HGV Insurance policies you must have a specific HGV licence, which will be either a N2 or N3.

An N2 licence allows you to drive a Heavy Goods Vehicle with a maximum allowed mass of 12 tonnes, while a N3 will allow you to drive a HGV of more than 12. This is the licence that will stand you in better stead with haulage firms.

The problem is cost. A HGV licence accepted by HGV insurance policies will cost upwards of £2,000. This can either be paid for by you (the quickest route to success) or you can try and get a company to sponsor your training.
