Driver CPC Test Regulations

The biggest change to the truck and HGV industry in 40 years takes place on September 10th as new Driver CPC regulations come into force.

As a HGV or truck owner you will no doubt be very aware of this change to legislation, the most significant since the introduction of LGV driving tests in 1969, but what do the new Driver CPC Regulations mean for Truck drivers?

From September 10th every new driver wishing to drive a truck or HGV will have to obtain a Drivers CPC, while existing truck drivers will be required to take the test by 2014 to continue driving.

The Driver CPC stands for the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence and it entails undergoing 35 hours of training, which for existing drivers will usually be spread over five years up to the 2014 deadline to minimise disruption to businesses.

So what is the reason for the Drivers CPC in the first place? The government say they introducing the regulations to:

  • Improve road safety.
  • Recognise and accredit skills for professional bus, coach and lorry drivers.
  • Encourage drivers to continually update their skills and knowledge.
  • Raise the status of bus, coach and lorry drivers to promote driving as a career.

But the work does not end there. In order for you to keep your Drivers CPC you must then continue to complete 35 hours of training every five years and training will be tailored made to fit your personal requirements and to improve your driving.

In general the training will be split under the following headings:

  • Safe and fuel efficient driving (this may include vehicle loading, fuel Consumption and pollution).
  • Legal requirements (rules for taco graph, driver’s hours).
  • Health and safety, service and logistics (including first aid, passenger safety, customer service)
