Tighter Restrictions for HGV and Truck Drivers?
Truck and HGV drivers are being warned to expect tighter restrictions as further research suggests that lorries and buses cause more fatal accidents than any other form of transport per miles travelled.
The European Transport Safety Council has just published the results of a recent study into drink driving in HGV, bus and coach transport and in it said that even though these drivers were less likely to drink and drive than private motorists, the size and weight of HGVs, and trucks meant crashes involving such vehicles were more likely to result in a death.
As part of the study the team discovered that in the UK for every 200 million miles travelled by HGV and trucks they are involved in three fatal crashes. For cars that number is below 2.
And according to the latest Road Collision Facts document 82 commercial and public service vehicles were involved in a fatal crash in 2008 (the last year that figures were available), compared to 234 cars.
The belief is that the study may force the UK Government to look at creating a structured and tiered system for drink-driving, with possible lower rates for commercial drivers, such as HGV and Truck drivers.
Back in 2001 the European Union recommended that anyone driving a HGV or Truck only be allowed to have a 20mg /mls limit.
The proposals don’t end there either as the report also suggests testing for drink driving at every Police check point.
