What is light haulage insurance?

Light haulage insurance is a type of insurance specifically designed for individuals or businesses who carry goods on behalf of customers. Typically someone will operate a smaller vehicle – using either a 3.5 or 7.5 tonne vehicle – and operates on a limited delivery basis. Examples could be where the operator has a contract delivering goods to a single location every day.

The key consideration for insurers is the limited number of drops per day as opposed to a courier who may make numerous drops every day.

Cover can be flexible and normally extends beyond basic third party fire and theft cover to comprehensive. Arranging comprehensive insurance means that your vehicle is protected against accidental damage in the event of an incident occurring. For most individuals or businesses operating a light haulage vehicle this is vital as it ensures the vehicle is back on the road as soon as possible.

In addition to vehicle insurance, you will need to consider for the goods being carried in your vehicle. This can be arranged under a goods in transit insurance policy whch will provide cover should your customers goods be damaged or stolen.

Also, you should consider arranging public liability insurance which will provide protection from claims made by members of the public or businesses where you may be delivering.

Of course if you have drivers working for you, even on a casual basis, you are required by law to arrange employers’ liability insurance.

There are many providers who offer this type of insurance cover, but finding the one that is right for your individual business needs can be difficult and time consuming.

We have access to a number of different schemes from many of the UK’s leading insurers and will take the time to understand your individual needs, then recommend a product that suits your individual requirements.

Are you a courier or a haulier?

We really could write pages around this question but insurers tend to view a light haulier as a business or individual who makes a small number of regular drops per day (e.g a regular contract to one or two regular destinations each day) whereas a courier may make upwards of 20 deliveries each day to different addresses. Of course each individuals’ circumstances are different but it is vital that you make sure that when you arrange your insurance the insurer understands how your business operates to avoid problems when a claim occurs.

One similarity between courier and light haulage insurance is that both policies need to include cover for hire and reward.

Additional policies available

We can arrange a policy to your suit your exact requirements, but common additional covers are:

  • Goods in transit insurance
  • Employers liability
  • Public liability insurance
  • Vehicle breakdown insurance

  • This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
