HGV Driver Shortage – latest update March 2025

The Daily Mail is renowned for sensationalising articles to “sell papers” – or online subscriptions in today’s digital age – and whilst we feel this is the case with this article, there are elements of it that ring true.

It provides the latest update on the HGV driver shortage, claiming that despite a significant improvement on the 100,000 driver shortage at the height of the problem, there has been a recent decline, largely due to the aging workforce and retiring HGV drivers.

The HGV driver shortage in the UK was estimated to have reached around 100,000 in 2021. This figure was reported by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), and it was widely cited as a peak point in the crisis. The shortage was attributed to a combination of factors, including Brexit, an aging workforce, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on training and testing, and poor working conditions in the industry.
