Network Rail launch new “bridge height” awareness campaign aimed at HGV drivers

Recent statistics show that railway bridges are hit 5 times a day on average across the UK, with HGV’s the most common culprit. The average cost of a bridge repair is £13,000. The BBC website article also lists the top 10 bridges struck and their location.

The Watling Street railway bridge on the A5 in Hickley was the bridge struck the most, with 25 crashes which is nearly once a fortnight.

Newer lorry drivers, or those drivers that are frequently using different size vehicles, are being encouraged to double check the size of their vehicle and check for any low bridges before they start their journey.

Highways England adds “Around two-thirds of bridge strikes on our roads are caused by vehicles carrying a load.

“So to reduce the risk of this happening, we urge all drivers to follow these simple steps: Know your height, plan your route and secure your load”
