The RHA have claimed that at least 60,000 new HGV drivers need to be recruited and trained every year to allow for the drop off of existing drivers either retiring, selecting another job or allowing their Driver Qualification Card (DQC) to lapse.
Research showed that these 60,000 annual figures need to be achieved each year for the next five years as a minimum.
Many drivers are departing the industry due to age, long working hours and existing challenges around roadside facilities. Whilst it is recognised that the Government initiative to improve roadside facilities and overnight stops is improving, there is still significant work to do.
RHA MD said, โTo future-proof businesses and the supply chain for the long term, driver recruitment, training and retention must be an urgent priority for Government.โ
According to Logistics UKโs 2025 report: as of early 2025, the active HGVโdriver workforce was 293,714 โ a fall of 1.9% vs 2024.
