The Road Haulage Association (RHA) say that more Government investment is required in HGV Driver facilities.

This has been heightened recently as from 30th April 2024, lorries at both Dover and the Eurotunnel at Folkestone will be subject to more physical checks, and these extra delays might mean more HGV drivers having to park in unsecure areas, which is turn increases the chances of freight crime.

Criminals will target the unsecure areas as they know the risk of getting caught is significantly reduced.

Ashton Cull, the RHA Public Affairs Manager, recently said:

“Freight crime is organised crime – criminals know what’s moving, when it’s moving and where it’s most at risk and they have clear methods. Some drivers now avoid certain areas and truck stops because the security is bad and they’re at increased risk of being targeted.

We welcome the recent investment by the Government, but much more investment is needed in driver facilities. There are not enough sites across the country. That means, more truck-stops being built with stronger security to help raise the standards across the country.”
